  Oh, I need to cut holes of varying sizes, but I am very flexible with the sizes.

    A step bit (also called unibit) would work for holes 1" and smaller. Bigger than that, maybe a bi-metal hole saw. You'd also need a good vice or something to hold it in place lengthwise while you drill.
